What Is Jesmonite, and Why We Use It for Sculptural Lighting

What is jesmonite?

Jesmonite is a water-based composite made from a gypsum-based mineral filler combined with an acrylic resin binder. It was originally developed as a lighter, less toxic alternative to traditional cast stone and resin materials used in architectural detailing and sculpture.

Why do we use jesmonite for lamp bases?

Jesmonite lets us cast a base that feels heavy and grounded — important for a table lamp's stability — while keeping a smooth, matte, mineral-like finish that we can't get from injection-moulded plastic or resin alone. It also takes pigment well, which is how we produce consistent colourways across a piece like Vulcano or Alpa.

Is jesmonite durable?

Yes. Once cured, jesmonite is hard, chip-resistant under normal handling, and stable indoors. It shouldn't be left in direct exposure to water or extreme temperature swings, but as an indoor lighting base it holds up well over years of daily use.

How is it different from concrete or plaster lamp bases?

Concrete and plaster bases are typically heavier, more porous, and prone to hairline cracking as they cure and age. Jesmonite cures into a denser, more consistent surface, which is part of why we chose it as the foundation material across the Nexus Luminaires collection — paired, on most pieces, with a 3D-printed structural core above it.

Which Nexus Luminaires pieces use jesmonite?

Every current piece in our collection is built on a jesmonite base, from the faux fur-wrapped Momo and Cookie to the raw, monolithic Vulcano, where jesmonite forms the entire visible body rather than just the base.
